LAEM CHABANG PORT, THAILAND – 8 FAST FACTS
- Laem Chabang is a port city in Chonburi Province, Thailand, located on the east of Gulf of Thailandabout 120 km (75 mi) from Suvarnabhumi Airport . With a population of approx 93,000 the city has grown up around the port, but also serves as a major stop on the coastal highway linking Pattaya and Bangkok via Sukhumvit Road
- Laem Chabang Port is 21.06 square kilometers with a land area of 10.4km and capable of handling Super Post Panamax sized vessels.
- The port is strategically well placed economically, as it is part of the Belt and Road Initiative. This runs from the Chinese coast to the south via Singaporethrough the Strait of Malacca towards the southern tip of India, through the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean, there to the Upper Adriatic region to the northern Italian hub of Trieste with its rail connections to Central Europe and the North Sea.
- The Port is a “Landlord Port” , being run as a whole by the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT), while it allows private sectors to contract the operational function. It engages private sector contractors to manage various port operations thus helping to encourage a spirit of cooperation between both public and private entities.
- Port History: In 1961, Bangkok Port was the main port. The Royal Thai Government started its effort to construct a new deep-sea port at Laem Chabang, Chonburi to accommodate larger vessels, however the project was suspended due to the economic recession. The Sattahip port, formerly a Navy Port, was developed instead, and became operational for commercial purpose under PAT’s management in 1979.
- Construction of Laem Chabang Port as it is known today started in 1987. On 21 January 1991, the Port was officially opened at its multi – purpose terminal and the Sattahip Commercial Port was later returned to the Navy for military purpose.
- Future Development: The Port Authority of Thailand is in the process of ongoing development of this port with the goal of enhancing the ports competitiveness to reaffirm its position as gateway port of the sub-region. This will ultimately boost Thailands investment opportunities
